Music On the Mountain: The Allen Boys with DaShawn Hickman

4,981 views Oct 18, 2023Music on the Mountain, an outdoor concert held at the Western Residence in Asheville, was a lively celebration of the Fine Tuned program. This initiative, part of the Blue Ridge Music Trails, fosters mentorship and collaboration among emerging artists specializing in traditional music within Western North Carolina. The event featured a collaboration between The Allen Boys and DaShawn Hickman, deeply rooted in the Sacred Steel Tradition and serving as the house band for the House of God Church in Mount Airy, NC. They teamed up with Kelley Breiding, a multi-instrumentalist and old-time singer, to merge two distinct strains of traditional Surry County music, exploring connections between their styles and other musical genres. Notably, First Lady Kristin Cooper initiated Music at the Mansion, a video concert series celebrating the diversity of North Carolina’s music, as part of the 2019 Year of Music project, Come Hear North Carolina. This series was made possible through the generous support of the North Carolina Arts Foundation. 0:00 I Just Got Off That Devil’s Train 3:10 I Don’t Know What You’ve Come To Do 8:30 Love’s In Need of Love Today 13:29 Dirty Snake 17:42 Joyful Sound 13:59 Boogie Woogie Preaching Man / Don’t Let the Devil Ride 30:18 Big Boss Man 36:00 Lord, I Need Your Help 42:57 Crazy 47:27 Walking in Jerusalem 51:51 Shake, Rattle, & Roll / I’ve Got A Woman

CLH Trio – Millennium Stage (December 7, 2024)

Live Tonight on Millennium Stage: Guitarist and composer Connor Leeds Holdridge and his trio perform an intimate set of blues-infused originals with the occasional deep cut from his favorite records. Featuring two of D.C.’s finest jazz bassists and drummers, the CLH Trio keeps it loose and colorful as they explore retro soundscapes, tight grooves, and introspective ballads.

James Oscar Smith was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania northwest of Philadelphia.[4] He joined his father doing a song-and-dance routine in clubs at the age of six. He began teaching himself to play the piano. When he was nine, Smith won a Philadelphia radio talent contest as a boogie-woogie pianist.[5] After a period in the U.S. Navy, he began furthering his musical education in 1948, with a year at Royal Hamilton College of Music, then the Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia in 1949.
